  DirectorNHS Sustainable Development Unit (NHSSDU)

  David Pencheon is a UK trained Public Health Doctor and is currently Director of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (England) [NHS SDU].

  The NHS SDU develops organisations, people, tools, and policy to help the NHS in England fulfil its potential as a leading sustainable and low carbon organisation.

  The role of this unit is to help shape NHS policy nationally and locally, to spread the best evaluated practice on sustainable development, to promote an appropriate NHS response to climate change and to develop programmes of organisational and personal development in these areas for NHS organisations and employees.

  David was previously Director of the NHS Eastern Region Public Health Observatory from 2001 to 2007, serving the East of England.

  He has worked as joint Director of Public Health, a Public Health Training Programme Director in the East of England, with the NHS R&D programme, and in China in the early 1990s with Save the Children Fund (UK).

  His main interests and areas of research and publication are: sustainable development, climate change, underpinning local and national public health action and policy with good information and evidence, training and professional development, organisational development, medical informatics and decision support, and education in evidence based practice.

  The Unit is run under the auspices of the Office of the SHAs (OSHA) on behalf of the SHA Chief Executives. It is hosted by the Strategic Health Authority in the East of England in Fulbourn, Cambridge. The Accountability of the Unit is through the CEO, Sir Neil McKay and to the CEO of the NHS, David Nicholson.
